Hollande, Obama discuss strategies against ISIL, Ebola

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) French President Francois Hollande spoke with US President Barack Obama by phone Monday evening to discuss ongoing fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and efforts needed to tackle Ebola epidemic in West Africa, Hollande's office said.

Ebola has not hit France as yet but a local case has emerged in Spain and the US has had one fatality and one local contamination in the past days.

Ebola was high on the agenda for Monday's talks and both men agreed that "greater mobilisation by the international community and by the European Union" was needed in coordination with the United Nations and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Hollande informed Obama that France would be responding favourably to a Guinean demand to build additional treatment centres. Guinea, along with Liberia and Sierra Leone, is one of the worst hit countries in West Africa, where at least 4,000 people are believed to have died from Ebola.

France is also mulling the establishment of airport controls for passengers coming from affected regions, Hollande told Obama, according to his office.

The US, for its part, has set up controls on arrival at five major airports.

On ISIL, the two leaders "confirmed their determination" to fight against ISIL "within the framework of the international collation" set up for this purpose.

Similarly, Hollande and Obama said they would "reinforce international support for the moderate Syrian opposition," although no details on how this would work were given.

Both also agreed in a statement to confirm their commitment to support the new Iraqi authorities and the Iraqi forces that are in the front lines of the fight against ISIL.
