British Foreign Secretary arrives in Iraq's N. city of Irbil


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond arrived Monday in Iraqi Kurdistan region city of Irbil after visiting Baghdad.

A source in Kurdistan region told KUNA Hammond was received by the President of Kurdistan Region Diwan Fuad Hussain and the region's Interior Minister Karim Sinjari.

The British official is scheduled to meet various Kurdish leaders, including President Masoud Barzani.

The British Defense Ministry said the military was training Kurdish peshmerga forces fighting the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

A team of British specialists are also training Peshmerga forces to use heavy artillery provided by the British in September.

Earlier, Hammond said London would provide a balanced support for the federal government in Baghdad and regional government in Kurdistan province, to step up fight against ISIL militants because airstrikes were not enough.
