Socialists in EP welcome outcome of Gaza donors' conf.

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Group of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament Monday "gladly welcomed" the outcome of yesterday's Gaza Donors Conference in Cairo.

"The pledge of USD 5.4 billion in aid is an excellent outcome and this money is necessary to improve the difficult living conditions in Gaza and to give hope to people for the future. This is a significant sign of solidarity from the international community to the Palestinian people," said vice-president of the Group in-charge for foreign affairs Victor Bostinaru.

The tragic 50-day conflict between Israel and Hamas earlier this year resulted in the destruction of most of Gaza's infrastructure and a large number of Palestinians lost their homes, he noted in a statement.

"The EU must increase its engagement in the negotiation and reconstruction process, along with all the other regional and international parties involved. We call on both sides to take this opportunity to further advance the talks towards a comprehensive agreement," he added.

The Socialists and Democrats are the second-largest group in the EP.
