Jirga seeks meeting with PM

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The grand jirga of opposition parties in Pakistan has formally approached Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and sought time for a meeting with him with insiders claiming that a new solution acceptable to all has been prepared by the jirga members to resolve the political crisis.

"The jirga members first approached the prime minister before Eid Al Adha who agreed to have a meeting with them sometime in mid-October. The jirga members wanted to meet the prime minister today but now the meeting is likely to take place by tomorrow," an official source said yesterday.

Jirga member Senator Kalsoom Parveen said they have held 42 meetings and discussed the issue in detail with all the political stakeholders and now a new formula has been prepared that may work in resolution of the ongoing political crisis.

"It was a wrong impression that all parties had become frustrated and there were no efforts going on to resolve the political crisis. The jirga members were in touch with all stakeholders and waiting for a proper time to resume formal talks with Pakistan Tehreek Insaf, Pakistan Awami Tehreek and the government," she said.

The opposition jirga comprising Jamaat-e-Islami leaders Siraj-ul-Haq and Liaqat Baloch, Rehman Malik, Hasil Bizinjo, Kalsoom Parveen and Ghazi Gulab Jamal earlier floated its proposals last month but failed to make any headway in talks.

The proposals included formation of a judicial commission through an ordinance to probe alleged vote fraud in 2013 General Elections; specific time frame to complete findings; provision of powers to the commission to take aid of any official or expert, and resignation of the prime minister if it is found that the elections were rigged to favour any political party.

To a question, Kalsoom Parveen said PTI and PAT are absolutely ready for talks and the government has also the will for their early resumption, adding "All stakeholders have trust in our efforts and vowed to extend their full cooperation at every stage of talks."

Replying to another question, she said former president Asif Ali Zardari would not lead their delegation when they would go for a meeting with the prime minister but maintained that the PPP leader can put in his efforts separately to find out any amicable solution to the political crisis.

When asked about the acceptable solution they have prepared, she said, "They have so far not shared this solution even with PTI, PAT and the government so when all stakeholders would discuss it in detail then it would be made public."
