Qatar- Australia will deliver a fantastic Asian Cup, says Postecoglou


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Australia coach Ange Postecoglou is confident that the organisers of the 2015 Asian Cup will deliver a 'fantastic' event.

"The Asian Cup 2015 will be an outstanding sporting event. We are very much looking forward to it. January is the great time to be in Australia. It will be a fantastic Asian Cup," Postecoglou said while speaking to reporters on the eve of the Qatar vs Australia friendly match.

Postecoglou said the build up for the January 9 to 31 continental event is gathering pace.

"One thing about Australia and Australian fans is they love a sporting contest when there is a lot in line and not just a friendly contest. So from that perspective, if we do well than the whole nation will be following us. Australians love good sporting contest and a top level sport."

The 49-year-old who managed age group teams in Australia before been elevated as coach of the senior team said Australia is building a pool of players to replace the ageing heroes ahead of the Asian Cup.

"We need to broaden the players pool. We always try to give new players an opportunity," the Australian said about his decision to field Cahill as substitute in the last match against UAE which they drew goalless.

Asked as to whether the New York Red Bulls striker is set to turn a new page of his international career Postecoglou said; "It not for me to retire players. Australia do not retire players. Every time Tim (Cahill) and Mark Bresciano have excelled in Australia colours."

Cahill, the former Everton striker is 34 and so is Bresciano, the Al Gharafa midfielder.
