American Saudi jets strike Kobani targets

(MENAFN- Arab News) WASHINGTON: US and Saudi warplanes carried out eight air strikes in Syria on Sunday and Monday mainly targeting Islamic State militants fighting for a key border town the US military said.

Bombers and fighter aircraft hit IS positions in seven strikes around Kobani near the Turkish border US Central Command said.

The targets included IS units staging areas a heavy machine gun position and five buildings held by the group.

An airstrike also hit an IS garrison northwest of the Syrian town of Raqa according to the command which oversees US military operations in the region.

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Monday blamed the US and the 'wicked' British government for creating the Islamic State in his first speech since undergoing prostate surgery last month.

'America Zionism and especially the veteran expert of spreading divisions the wicked government of Britain have sharply increased their efforts of creating divisions between the Sunnis and Shiites' he said according to his website.

'They created Al-Qaeda and Da'esh in order to create divisions and to fight against the Islamic Republic but today they have turned on them (Islamic State)' Khamenei said.

'A careful and analytic look at the developments reveals that the US and its allies in efforts that are falsely termed countering Da'esh seek to create division and enmity among the Muslims rather to destroy the root causes of that (terrorist) current' Khamenei said.

'Shiites and Sunnis must know that any action or remark including insulting one another leads to increased sensitivities and ignite flames. This will certainly benefit the common enemy of all Muslims.'
