(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman will host the third European-Asian Breast Cancer Congress at Al Bustan Palace a Ritz-Carlton Hotel from October 28 to 31.
The event will focus on increasing awareness about breast diseases promoting scientific research and spreading awareness in Europe and Asia on methods of preventing diagnosing and treating the deadly disease.
The conference will also focus on presenting proposals to national health authorities aiming to reduce cases of breast cancer and deaths in the European and Asian countries. Latest studies and researches on breast cancer will be presented and discussed at the meet.
Dr Adel al Ajmi chairman of the conference and senior consultant Breast Unit Department of Surgery Sultan Qaboos University Hospital said 'Breast cancer is not as life-threatening as it was decades ago thanks to early detection accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. However breast cancer cases are on the rise in Oman and across the world.
'This meeting is of global importance as it will bring together scientists surgeons oncologists radiotherapists pathologists nuclear medicine physicians and nurses to discuss issues related to breast cancer.'
Dr Ajmi said that a number of factors like industrialisation and urban development westernisation of lifestyle delayed child births and reduced fertility in women contribute to breast cancer cases. He said that the survival rates among Omani women are lower. 'The overall survival rate for a patient with five years of breast cancer in the West is 75 per cent whereas it is only 50 per cent for a patient in the eastern part of the world' Dr Ajmi added. As part of the congress a public awareness day will be held on October 31.
