UN chief urges all Libyan parties to hold dialogue

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Saturday night urged the Libya's warring factions to make peace and hold dialogue in order to solve the country's crisis.

Addressing the meeting held in Tripoli in the presence of some parliamentarians, Ban stressed the importance of an "inclusive dialogue" as it is the only solution to the crisis.

"There is no alternative to dialogue," Ban was quoted by Libyan News Agency, monitered here, as saying. "It is my conviction that all problems in Libya can be solved through dialogue. Nevertheless, we understand that the path will be long and difficult. Peace building always is." He said that Libya needs a government of national unity provided by political support to be able to implement decisions. He called for halting fighting among factions nationwide.

Ban also called on armed groups to withdraw from cities, airports and governmental institutions, saying that military intervention will not solve the country's crisis.

He said that the UN Security Council and international community will not allow further bloodshed caused by warring factions across the country.

Ban stresses that the spread of weapons poses dangerous effects to the country and should be addressed.

He added the UN provided humanitarian aid to ease the sufferings of people.

The situation in Tripoli has been worsened by a separate battle in Benghazi where pro-government forces are battling Islamist militias who have taken several army camps.
