Powerful Typhoon Threatens Western Japan

(MENAFN- QNA) People in western Japan are bracing for a powerful typhoon as it heads north after passing over Okinawa's main island.

Weather officials said Typhoon Vongfong is moving at a rate of 20 kilometers per hour, (NHK) reported.

The extremely low pressure near its center is causing winds of up to 126 kilometers an hour.

Strong winds have left at least 35 people, some of them seriously.

Authorities have advised more than 200,000 people in Okinawa and Kagoshima prefectures to evacuate because of possible flooding and mudslides.

The meteorological agency is warning of heavy rain and strong winds in a wide area in the western parts of the country.
