Lebanese Army positions targeted with new attacks

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))  Unidentified gunman have attacked a number of army positions in the northern port city of Tripoli, some 80 kilometers north of the capital, the official media reported on Friday.

Gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire at military posts in Talaat Al-Omari and Haret Al-Saida in Tripoli and the troops retaliated for the attacks, carried out wide-scale deployment and staged patrols in several districts of the densely-populated city.

On Friday, a soldier was killed and another was wounded in a gunfire attack on an army position in northern governorate of Akkar. Also yesterday, military outposts close to the Lebanese-Syrian border were targeted with sporadic gunfire attacks from the Syrian side of the frontier areas.

Such attacks are suspected to have been carried out by elements affiliated to the Syrian opposition. The army has recently engaged in fierce fighting against armed Syrian opposition forces that advanced from Syrian areas close to the eastern borders into the Lebanese town of Arsal. The gunmen withdrew to the Syrian territories following the battles, but took with them a number of soldiers as hostages.
