(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Angry Birds Universe, a first of its kind travelling exhibition which combines education and fun, witnessed warm reception from fans during its opening yesterday at Katara.
"Angry Birds Universe: The Art & Science Behind a Global Phenomenon" is a brand new exhibition by US-based Imagine Exhibitions together with Rovio and JRA which premiered in Dubai recently.
Doha is the second stop of the exhibition which would go around the world in the next five years.
"It's a pleasure to be in the Gulf and work with Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) to bring this exhibition here. There haven't been a lot of such educational exhibition in Qatar so it's nice to introduce the idea with something playful and fun with characters everyone knows," Tom Zaller, President and CEO, Imagine Exhibitions Inc, told this daily.
Asked why he chose to premiere the exhibition in the Gulf, Zaller said: "I wanted to be in a region where people appreciate these activities. Dubai and Qatar governments want to bring educational exhibits rather than just games because they want the children to grow up and learn these basic principles, these building blocks."
Built on a 1,500sqm area, the expo comprises areas where children can learn scientific principles that can be applied in every day life while having fun with games in an interactive and immersive way.
"The idea is to take the playfulness of the game and create activities that are educationally based. The games take place on an island where the birds live, protecting their eggs from pigs who want to steal them," Zaller explained.
The expo's geographical areas, including Bamboo Forest, Cobalt Plateaus, The City, Cave Studio, Crown Mountains and Space provide visitors with interactive games based on basic educational concepts under the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) principle.
"Many countries adopt the STEM but we added art because we think it is an important part of life," Zaller said, adding the exhibition was specially designed for students but could be enjoyed by people of all ages.
"The written content is good for children aged six to 12 but the concepts are for every one," he said, adding the expo provides chance for collaborative learning involving the entire family.
Among the concepts visitors can learn are friction, mass, velocity, simple machines and mechanical advantages, gravity, orbits, space, rockets, natural history of birds, animation, drawing and music.
The use of colours and the Angry Birds brand delivers effectively educational and fun elements of the expo visitors from all over the region enjoyed at the opening.
"It has been a very busy day. We see Saudis, Kuwaitis, Emiratis and many Qataris and people from all over the region and many seem very happy," Zaller said.
The expo is also catered to schools and since it's a travelling museum it can inspire students to visit other museums, he added.
The exhibition is open today and tomorrow from 11am to 11pm, from October 11 to 31 from Sunday to Thursday (9am to 1pm and 4pm to 10pm) and on Fridays and Saturdays (1pm to 11pm). Ticket is priced at QR50 and is free for children below five.
