Myanmar releases more than 3,000 prisoners

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency)  Myanmar released 3,073 prisoners Tuesday, including 58
foreigners, under a presidential pardon, in a move that did not seem
to target political detainees, according to dpa.

'We are very disappointed that only one political prisoner was
released,' said Bo Kyi, joint secretary of the country's Assistant
Association for Political Prisoners.

President Thein Sein has released more than 2,000 political prisoners
since coming to power in 2011, under persistent pressure from Western
governments and in exchange for those countries lifting sanctions.

But a total of 130 activists were awaiting trial for political
activities, including 80 in prison, the AAPP reported in late
September.

Most sanctions have already been dropped on Myanmar, which was under
military rule from 1962 to 2010.
