US confirms further elimination of ISIL targets in Syria, Iraq


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Coalition airstrikes in Syria took out nine ISIL targets on Monday and Tuesday, "using attack, bomber, fighter, and remotely piloted aircraft," according to a statement from US Central Command (CENTCOM).

"Two airstrikes west of Al-Hasakah successfully struck multiple ISIL buildings, including an air observation building and staging areas," CENTCOM announced. "Another airstrike northeast of Deir Ezzor successfully struck an ISIL staging area and an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) production facility. One airstrike south of Kobane destroyed three ISIL armed vehicles and damaged another," while a strike "southeast of Kobane destroyed an ISIL armed vehicle carrying anti-aircraft artillery." There were "two airstrikes southwest of Kobane (that) damaged an ISIL tank," while "another airstrike south of Kobane destroyed an ISIL unit," the statement affirmed. The last strike "southwest of Rabiyah struck a small group of ISIL fighters." Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates took part in the mission, said the statement.

In Iraq, the US and Belgian military took out four ISIL targets using a mix of attack and drone aircraft.

"One airstrike destroyed an ISIL armed vehicle firing on Peshmerga forces northeast of Sinjar," while another "destroyed two ISIL armed vehicles," CENTCOM declared.

An "ISIL armed vehicle" was also destroyed, as well as "a small group of ISIL fighters." The number of casualties was not provided.

On Tuesday, State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki added that "several individual opposition groups have formed de facto coalitions in some (Syrian) towns, including those near the Turkish border. And they're working together to push back and hold by to the degree they can ISIL and their efforts that have been underway on the ground." She also announced that General John Allen, the special presidential envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL, and Ambassador Brett McGurk, deputy special presidential envoy, are in Amman, Jordan "where they met with tribal leaders and sheikhs who have bravely resisted ISIL in Iraq." Allen and McGurk "praised their courage and affirmed that those who stand against ISIL will continue to be supported by the international coalition," Psaki said. "They also discussed our support for Prime Minister (Haidar Al) Abadi's vision of a united Iraq and a united Iraqi National Guard that both empowers local populations to protect their communities and incorporates those forces within the formal national security structure." Tomorrow the two US officials are expected to meet with King Abdullah "and other Jordanian government officials," she stated, adding that they will be in Cairo, Egypt, on October 8, and then Ankara, Turkey, on October 9 and 10.
