First aid kits on the other hand recorded a minor current value decline. This was largely down to the category being highly mature and saturated with limited growth opportunities.

Competitive Landscape

Beiersdorf remained the leading manufacturer in wound care in Germany in 2013 commanding a 39% share of value sales. The company’s position can be attributed to the strong presence of the Hansaplast brand. Beiersdorf saw its value sales increase by 3% in 2013 mainly due to a loyal customer base as well as its ability to cater for the needs of multiple target groups. Paul Hartmann ranked second in wound care with a value share of 21%. It was also the leading player in gauze tape and other wound care with a value share of 71%. The company was also active in first aid kits and sticking plasters/adhesive bandages. Within sticking plasters/adhesive bandages Hartmann was active with the growing Dermaplast brand.
