INTERPOL sets up task force to combat environmental crime in Africa

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Global police organisation, INTERPOL, announced Tuesday it had set up a "dedicated" task force to tackle illegal ivory trafficking and other environmental crimes in Africa.

The new unit will be based in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, where INTERPOL already has its regional bureau for East Africa.

The Lyon-based policing agency said in a statement that the Kenyan operation will be linked to the Environmental Security Unity based at the headquarters in France.

The new task for will collaborate with national law enforcement agencies and regional bureaus and will have a particular focus on wildlife crime.

"With illicit trade in ivory and rhinoceros horn a major concern in East Africa, the team will work with countries and partner organisations to further the activities of INTERPOL's Project Wisdom, which combats elephant and rhinoceros poaching and the illegal trade in ivory," the statement said.

No operational details for the task force were revealed but INTERPOL indicated that Australia would be playing an important role in cooperating with the project because of its vast experience with environmental crime and other issues.
