Coast Guard warns on drowning accidents during Eid
(MENAFN- Arab News) A ten-year old girl nearly drowned at the corniche in Jeddah but was rescued in time and is now recovering in a hospital official sources said.
'The child was about to drown but timely intervention by the Coast Guard helped her to survive and she was taken to the King Abdulaziz hospital where her condition has stabilized' Col. Naji Al-Juhani spokesperson of the Coast Guard in the Makkah region said on Tuesday.
The corniche areas in Jeddah and Dammam are popular haunts throughout the year but during the Eid holidays it bursts into activity when families flock to the beaches to enjoy the weather and give their children a taste of the freedom of the great outdoors not to mention the rides and scores of food outlets catering to different palates.
However a well-planned picnic at these places can turn into a disaster if parents are not vigilant with their children coast guard officials warned. It is not uncommon to hear of cases of children drowning on a family outing. Often parents leave their children by themselves near the waterfront exposing them to great danger.
According to the Coast Guard if one spots danger or wants to help rescue anyone in distress he or she should call 994.
Meanwhile Al-Juhani said that the Coast Guard had also rescued two Saudi children who drowned at the waterfront in Qunfuda at midnight on Monday. In addition a Yemeni expatriate who was attempting to end his life was also rescued and handed over to the authorities to take further action.
In the Eastern Province a total of seven cases of drowning have been reported in the last two days. Five cases were reported at Half-Moon beach in Alkhobar and two cases at Palm Beach in Jubail according to Coast Guard officials.
'Four children under 10 who were found drowning at Half-Moon beach were rescued and shifted to King Fahd Hospital by the Coastal Guard' Col. Omar Al-Kalabi spokesperson of the Coastal Guard in the Eastern province told local media.
In another case a father and his two-and-a-half-year-old child were also rescued at Half-Moon beach and shifted to hospital for treatment.
The Coast Guard official noted that all the reported cases of drowning were found in prohibited areas of the beach in the Arabian Sea.
