(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Legal studies is fast picking up as a popular career choice for Emiratis.
The LLM announcement came at a time when Dubai is making strong strides as a business and trade hub. The programme is designed to respond to the needs of legal professionals working in the UAE while helping the evolving legal system which is at the heart of the UAE’s international business development efforts.
Mohammed Al Shamsi a Dubai Court of Appeal judge who joined the LLM programme at the University of Dubai said law and justice in Dubai “is a way of life” for him. Most residents and visitors respect the rule of law and trust law enforcement agencies which maintain peace and security in the country he said.
“The LLM programme has helped me learn about legal systems in other countries and how there is an increasing global pressure on business law. It requires us to acquire legal knowledge that could help both Dubai and the UAE maintain its top global ranking in law and justice.”
According to the latest Rule of Law Index released by the World Project the UAE ranked fifth in the world in terms of order and security and number one in the region in half of the eight main categories that contribute to the overall rankings.
Mohammed Hamzeh an audit controller at Dubai Ruler’s Court said he joined the LLM programme to better understand the effects of many legal transactions on local courts and law enforcement. He added that the two majors offered by the LLM serve him well in his career as an audit controller at the Ruler’s court.
Dr Harold Koster Director of the programme said lawyers judges and legal professionals in Dubai need better access to international practices. “Law degrees are offered by other universities but none conduct classes in English.”
He added that the LLM assists not only those who wish to pursue a legal career but also those who are involved at the highest levels of business and government.
It is noted that the Dubai Courts announced last year that it registered more than 103000 cases registering a four per cent increase from 2012.
Online career portals reveal a growing need for business and corporate lawyers with excellent English skills. Law firms need to hire attorneys who can read write and communicate in English because of the increasing number of international business and corporate cases.
