Passionate students across eight prestigious schools in the UAE took to the stage on October 2 to partake in a topical discussion during the 15th Inter-School Debate Competition.

In association with the Consulate General of India GEMS Our Own Indian School (OOIS) in Dubai hosted the event which serves as the perfect avenue for teen speakers to communicate their ideas and hone their debating skills.
On the day Our Own English High School Sharjah (Main) bagged the much-coveted Inter-School Debate Competition - Rolling Trophy.
The annual event which started in 2000 is held in commemoration of the birth anniversary of India’s Father of Nation - Mahatma Gandhi the great soul who inspired the world with his faith in truth and justice for all mankind.
The Consul-General of India in Dubai Anurag Bhushan along with other dignitaries graced the occasion with their presence.
This year’s topic up for the debate was: “There is more intellect than emotion in our way of life”.

When speakers ‘for the motion’ gave the credit of success of Mangalyan India’s Mars Orbiter Mission to intellect it was refuted by speakers ‘against the motion’ by giving the credit of success to motivation. Georgina Pereira of the GEMS OOIS pointed out that a doctor cannot take decisions based on emotions but rather on the knowledge of science.
Since its inception the competition has opened doors for opinionated students into a world of intellectual pursuit competitive spirit and skills in organisation clarity and depth of analysis.
Winners on the day included Adithya Christopher from The Model School Abu Dhabi who was judged ‘Best Speaker’ for the Motion and Ram Prakash Sridhar from Our Own High School Al Warqa’a was picked as ‘Best Speaker’ Against the Motion.
Earlier 16 schools participated in the preliminary round held at GEMS OOIS and on the sidelines of the final debate an art exhibition featuring works of students from all participating schools was also organised.
