(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The national capital celebrated Eid Al Adha with thousands of Muslims thronging mosques to offer prayers yesterday.

"Around two lakh (200,000) people offered prayers at the mosque for peace and unity in the country," Maulana Mufti Mohammed Mukkaram, Shahi Imam of Fatehpuri Masjid in old Delhi, said.

On the auspicious day, Muslims across Delhi greeted each other and distributed meat of the sacrificed animals among friends, relatives and the poor.

Besides, biryani, korma and other delicacies are also prepared on the occasion.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday extended his heartiest greetings to the people on the occasion of Eid Al Adha.

"Best wishes on Eid Al Adha. May this festival strengthen the spirit of harmony and compassion in society," Modi said in a statement.

President Pranab Mukherjee urged people to imbibe the spirit of love and service. "I convey greetings and best wishes to all fellow citizens, especially my Muslim brothers and sisters," the president said in a statement.

"Let us imbibe the spirit of universal love, brotherhood, sacrifice and service which constitute eternal values always upheld by our composite culture and work unitedly for peace, progress and prosperity of our nation and the world," he added.

Eid Al Adha was celebrated yesterday with religious fervour and gaiety across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

The day began with Muslims, attired in their best, offering Eid prayers at Eidgahs or open grounds and mosques in both the states.

Tens of thousands offered prayers in Hyderabad and nine other districts of Telangana and all 13 districts of neighboring Andhra Pradesh.

The streets of the Muslim-majority old city of Hyderabad wore a festive look while butchers, coming from other districts, did brisk business.

The biggest congregation in Hyderabad was held at the historic Mir Alam Eidgah where thousands people offered prayers.

This is the first Eid Al Adha after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.
