S. Korea President Calls for Regular InterKorean Dialogue to Achieve Peace

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Seoul October 06 (QNA) - South Korean President Park Geun-hye on Monday called for regular inter-Korean talks to improve relations with a view of reaching a "peaceful unification" following a surprise visit to South Korea by top North Korean officials South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.

"I hope that the two Koreas will open the door for peace through dialogue on the occasion of the visit" Park said in a meeting with her top aides.

Her comments came two days after the North Korean officials met with South Korean counterparts in Incheon on the sidelines of the closing ceremony for the Asian Games.

Park instructed officials to make thorough preparations for the upcoming talks.

"We should make efforts to ensure that the high-level contact will lay the groundwork for a peaceful unification by holding regular inter-Korean dialogue not just a one-time dialogue" Park said.

The South Korean president said she expects North Korea to demonstrate its willingness to improve inter-Korean relations through action. Seoul wants Pyongyang to admit its involvement in the sinking of a warship that killed 46 South Korean sailors in March 2010 before lifting sanctions the former imposed on the latter. "A South Korea-led international investigation found that North Korea torpedoed the vessel although Pyongyang has denied its responsibility" Yonhap reported.
