UNIFEL condemns Israeli assault on Lebanese military site

Date:

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) condemned on Sunday Israeli assault on a military site of the Lebanese army near Shebaa Farms, occupied by Israel, leaving a soldier injured.

In a statement, UNIFIL said it was informed that "an exchange of fire happened between troops of Israel and Lebanon." The incident caused a light injury to a Lebanese soldier, the statement added, noting that the incident poses a violation to the UN Security Council Resolution No. 1701.

According to the statement, UNIFIL Acting Force Commander Brigadier-General Tarundeep Kumar immediately contacted senior army commanders of both Lebanon and Israel, urging them to exercise maximum restraint and to cooperate with UNIFIL in order to prevent further escalation.

UNIFIL, which opened an investigation into the incident, pointed out that both sides "stressed their commitment to halt atrocities," indicating they are completely cooperating with UNIFIL, noted the statement.

The Lebanese army said in a statement that Israeli troops shot and wounded a Lebanese soldier across the ceasefire line between the two countries on Sunday.

The first UNIFIL troops arrived in South Lebanon in 1978, of which 15,000 are deployed to an area south of Litani River. At least 15,000 Lebanese soldiers are also deployed to the same area. Both troops were deployed according to the UNSC Resolution 1701.
