Biden apologizes to UAE over recent remarks


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))  US Vice President Joseph Biden has apologized to the United Arab Emirates for his recent remarks, implicating claims that the UAE backs some "terrorist organizations" in the Middle East, according to the official news agency, WAM.

WAM said General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE. Armed Forces, has received a phone call from the U.S. Vice President, who apologised for any implications in his recent statements that were understood to mean that Abu Dhabi "backed the growth of some of the terrorist organisations in the region." Biden added that the United States appreciates the UAE.'s historic role in combating extremism and terrorism as well as its advanced position in this respect. He hailed the Gulf states for the close cooperation with the international community on bolstering stability in the region.

In the phone conversation, the Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed and the U.S. Vice President discussed the bilateral relations between UAE and the United States and ways of supporting and enhancing the strategic cooperation between the two friendly countries, the official news agency said.

The two sides emphasised the common view of the two countries on combating and confronting terrorist organisations and their deviated and extremist ideology, which "demand a regional and international effort to combat, besiege and eradicate them and dry out their financial resources." They also emphasised the importance of international cooperation and all efforts that would put an end to these organisations and their terrorist practices, and that at the forefront of this cooperation comes the current international coalition which is fighting these organisations and foiling their goals of spreading chaos in the region.

The two sides also exchanged views on the other developments in the region and their two countries' positions on them.
