Phanfone Typhoon Hits Tokyo as One Confirmed Dead, 5 Missing

(MENAFN- QNA) The powerful typhoon of Phanfone hit the Tokyo metropolitan area Monday after making landfall in central Japan earlier in the day, bringing heavy rain and strong winds across wide areas of the country and leaving at least one dead and five missing, Japanese news agency Kyodo News reported.

Two men went missing in Yokohama, near Tokyo, today morning, after two separate mudslides hit a temple and an apartment building amidst the typhoon.

Yesterday, one U.S. military personnel was killed and two were missing when they were swept away by high waves in Okinawa, according to local police. A 21-year-old man from Tokyo went missing as well while surfing at a beach in Kanagawa Prefecture.

"More than 2 million people in eight prefectures were advised to evacuate while evacuation orders were issued to over 50,000 people, including those in Izu Oshima Island where heavy rains caused deadly mudslides in October last year," a Kyodo News report said.
