Thailand to be top rice exporter in 2014

(MENAFN) Thailand is expected to regain its position as the world's biggest rice exporter, after losing it two years ago to India, Gulf Daily News reported.

The kingdom has sold almost 7 million tons of rice in the January-September period, which is already more than it has sold in during the entire year in 213, and the country expects the amount of sold rice to reach 10 million tons by the end of the year.

The kingdom also said that it has already begun to regain some of the key African market it lost during those last two years, like Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Ghana in rice exports.

Meanwhile, the Thai government has been focused on lowering production costs of rice, including fertilizers and machinery on the farmers, while maintaining that the farmers need to focus on producing higher quality and higher value grains of rice instead of high quantity as well as inviting them to shift towards grains with higher market prices such as jasmine and organic rice.
