Women tear into Kerala singers jeans remark

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The singer said the practice of women wearing jeans was against the Indian culture which believes that womens beauty lies in its modesty.

The advice of Kerala’s legendry singer K J Yesudas to women not to wear sexually provoking outfits like jeans has stirred a hornet’s nest.

Women from all walks of life have come out openly against the most respected singer saying his statement was “totally anti-women”. Some even described the advice given by Yesudas while speaking at a function in the state capital of Trivandrum on Thursday “talebanistic”.

Yesudas felt that men were tempted to look beyond when women appeared in jeans. He said the practice of women wearing jeans was against the Indian culture which believes that women’s beauty lies in its modesty. Women become more beautiful when they cover what should be covered.

Most disagreed with him. Several women’s outfits took to the streets to register protest against the statement while others registered their anger through social networking sites. T N Seema president the All-India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP termed the statement was highly disgusting.

“The statement of Yesudas reflects the dangerous male chauvinistic attitude. This is the same approach that prevailed in Kerala decades ago when women were subjugated by men. They restrained women from what they liked to wear and go and do what they wanted by upholding the male superiority” Seema said adding that people like Yesudas had failed to see the changes in the society.

Bindu Krishna president of the Kerala Mahila Congress which staged a demonstration against Yesudas in the state capital said it was unfortunate to note that Yesudas still lived in the male dominated society. He has failed to read the rise of the women in the modern society.

“His voice is the same as that of the male-oriented society. It is a totally uncivilised statement and it should not have come from a respected musician like Yesudas. The danger is that when men like him speak in this manner there may be a tendency to see some substance in it” Bindu said.

“Yesudas should understand that the women of Kerala had earned their rights including that for wearing the dress they like through legendary struggles” she said adding that the women will be forced to take to streets if Yesudas did not withdraw his controversial statement.

Senior journalist Shahina saw the statement of Yesudas as an indication of the growing weakness of men. “It is an admission of the sexual weakness of men in general. If men are sexually provoked at the sight of a girl or woman in jeans it shows his weakness. In that case the solution is treatment to men” she added.

Noted mediaperson Paravathy sees it as the signs of ‘Talebanism’ taking root in Kerala. She said that she could not see the advice given by Yesudas as nothing shorter than the Taleban diktats.

“The Taleban used to order women to wear the dress they prefer. Highly respected men like Yesudas should not have stooped so low by suggesting a dress code for women. Kerala is not ruled by Taleban. He has trampled upon women’s dignity. He should immediately withdraw the statement and apologise to the women” she said.

Yesudas came for scathing criticism in social networking sites. Many described him senile. Some advised him to set his house in order first. They apparently wanted him to ensure that his daughters-in-law followed his dress code.
