Dubai — Cycling enthusiasts have continued their preparations for this year’s Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge by turning out in the hundreds on Friday morning for the second of four build up rides ahead of the big day on December 12 a Press release said.

Numbers were up on the first build-up ride as the excitement mounts for the biggest and most popular community cycling event in the Middle East. Nearly 420 turned up for the first build-up ride held over 35km in September and this morning close to 500 cyclists were up bright and early to cycle 45 kilometres at the Nad Al Sheba cycle track.

The Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge started in 2010 and now attracts cycling enthusiasts from all over the world. This year more than 2000 riders are expected to enter — four times more than took part when the event was launched.

“The build-up rides are a great way to prepare for the event as they are a great way to test your fitness and to practice riding in a group. The wonderful community atmosphere also motivates people to train for the event” organisers said Friday.

The build-up rides increase in distance each time in preparation for the full 92km race on December 12. The next two build-up rides will be held at the Dubai Cycling Course with the third ride on October 31 on a 65km course and the final one on November 28 over 85km.

The enthusiastic participants this morning ranged from novices to experienced riders.

and all enjoyed the chance to check how well their preparation is going. One entrant Peter said “I took up cycling a few months ago because my friends started doing it. They encouraged me to come today and it was great very motivating!”

Another entrant 43-year-old Ahmad said: “It’s great to be out here with all these people that love cycling we become friends and it’s a really positive atmosphere. We all try to do our best but there’s a great feeling of support and I can see I’m improving with each ride. I’m really looking forward to the 92”.

Newcomer Emma said: “This is my first year of cycling and it’s great to be able to do these rides and learn how to ride in a group. We’re lucky to have such great cycle tracks here that are safe to ride on. I’m really enjoying it and having organised rides like this is fantastic.

“We really appreciate the enthusiasm of the Dubai Sports Council and the UAE Cycling Federation for our event their support has been critical to the success of the event. And we couldn’t do it without our sponsors and supporters: Spinneys and Dubai 92” organisers added.
