South Sudan Peace Talks Adjourned

(MENAFN- QNA) Peace talks between warring parties in South Sudan, which have seen frequent interruptions since they began 10 months ago, were adjourned Sunday until October 16.

Representatives of President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar have agreed in principle to the formation of a federal government, but details remain to be hammered out.

"The negotiations have now adjourned to enable the stakeholders to undertake further consultations on the relevant issues," the East African bloc Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), which has been mediating the talks held in Addis Ababa, said in a statement.

"This session of talks has made more substantial progress than any other," IGAD said.

But the organization also expressed concern over ceasefires having been repeatedly broken and called on the parties to demonstrate "flexibility" to reach a "lasting settlement." A power struggle between Kiir and his former deputy Machar turned violent in mid-December, dpa reported.
