Biden Apologizes to Erdogan for Daesh Remarks

(MENAFN- QNA) U.S. Vice President Joe Biden has moved to apologize to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for comments he made in a speech at Harvard University in which he appeared to imply Turkey had supported terrorist groups in Syria such as Daesh, Turkish news agency Anadolu Agency reported.

In a Saturday phone call, Biden apologized to Erdogan for the suggestion that Turkey had in any way facilitated the rise of such groups. "The vice president apologized for any implication that Turkey or other allies and partners in the region had intentionally supplied or facilitated the growth of ISIL or other violent extremists in Syria," the White House said in a statement, using an acronym of the English translation of Daesh's name in Arabic.

The two officials agreed to continue cooperation between Turkey and the United States to tackle the threat of Daesh and restore security and stability to the region, Anadolu Agency reported.
