Qatar- Sidra honours top nurses

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Sidra Medical and Research Center has announced the recipients of the organisation's inaugural Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The Daisy Award is presented by over 1,700 healthcare organisations around the world as a way of honouring nurses.

The ceremony marked the first time that an organisation in Qatar had presented a Daisy Award to a member of its nursing staff. It is also the first time a hospital has recognised the contributions of nurses in helping to design a Greenfield facility.

Tina Anselmi-Moulaye, Clinical Educator, Rachel Browne, Clinical Nurse Leader and Jason Simpson, Acting Director, Perioperative Nursing Services, were nominated by colleagues to receive the award in recognition of their extraordinary leadership, commitment to education spanning local and international communities and dedication to a culturally-sensitive, multidisciplinary environment.

Commenting on the award, Dr Mary Boyd, Sidra's Chief Nursing Officer, said, "The care, compassion and devotion nurses show patients sets the tone for their experience at the hospital. The three recipients are truly exceptional professionals whose commitment to excellence in patient care not only embodies the spirit of Sidra but also the qualities of a Daisy Award winner. We are delighted to bring the Daisy Award to Qatar and look forward to celebrating the achievements of Sidra's growing nursing team in the future."

In addition, Dr Nabila Al Meer, Deputy Chief of Continuing Care and Supreme Council of Health Nursing Affairs at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), was named the Honorary Daisy Award recipient in recognition of her pioneering contributions to the nursing profession in Qatar.

Throughout her career spanning nearly 40 years, Dr Al Meer helped restructure nursing governance, education and nursing practices in Qatar.

She was also the first Qatari nurse to obtain a PhD in nursing from the University of Miami and a Master of Science from the University of Texas in the US.

"Dr Nabila's career and dedication to the nursing profession is a strong reflection of Qatar's welcoming and caring culture. She is an inspiration for nurses as her achievements encapsulate the hard work and commitment demonstrated by visionary nurses throughout history. We are honoured to acknowledge her outstanding leadership in the field," added Dr Boyd.

Thirteen Sidra nurses were nominated by their colleagues for the Daisy Award and the winners were selected to receive the award by a judging panel made up of senior members of Sidra's expert nursing team.

The achievements of the nominees and award recipients alike were celebrated at a ceremony hosted by Dr Boyd and featuring an address by Bonnie Barnes, president of the Daisy Foundation.

The Daisy Award was established by the Daisy Foundation, which was set up in the US by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died in 1999 from an auto-immune disease.

The care that Barnes and his family received from nurses during his hospitalisation inspired a unique means of thanking nurses who have gone above and beyond their daily routine to ensure patients receive exceptional care.

Sidra Medical and Research Center, currently under construction in Doha, is poised to become a groundbreaking hospital, research and education institution, focusing on the health and wellbeing of women and children regionally and globally.
