(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Violations of the labour law at work sites and labour accommodations have fallen significantly this year compared to last year indicating a rise in awareness among employers, a senior official has disclosed.
The Inspections section at the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs recorded 692 violations last year against 260 this year from the beginning of January to the end of September. This means that violations over the past nine months have not reached even 50 percent of the total violations recorded last year. Quoting Mohammed Al Meer, assistant director of the department, Al Sharq reported that the violations were detected following 85,000 raids at labour camps and work sites conducted by the department over the past two years. Of these 50,000 raids were conducted last year and 35,000 this year.
Major violations include a failure to keep salary roasters and work schedules and the list of workers who are not under the direct sponsorship of the employer concerned. There were also violations of the summer working hours set by the Ministry for outdoor workers that were applicable from June 15 to August 31.
Al Meer said that if the violation does not pose a direct threat to the health and safety of workers, the firms concerned will be issued a warning to rectify the error within a given timeframe. The work site or the workers' accommodation will be closed if the offense could have an immediate impact on the health and safety of workers. They will be allowed to function again only after the issue is resolved.
The inspection campaigns aims to ensure that work places and labour accommodations meet all the requirements. The scaffolding at worksites should be strong and painted in bright colours to be clearly visible for workers. This is to avoid incidents of falling from heights.
Workers should be given basic tips on health and safety like the use of a fire extinguisher and first aid kits. There should be rest places and clean toilets for workers, besides other amenities.
