Australia to Join Combat Operations Against Islamic State in Iraq

(MENAFN- QNA) Australia is to join international combat operations against Islamic State in Iraq, Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced Friday.

Abbott said the government has authorized the air force to carry out strikes against Islamic State and for special forces to enter Iraq to assist and advise Iraqi forces in their fight against Islamic State insurgents.

"IS has effectively declared war on the world. The world is responding," Abbott told reporters in Canberra.

"Today, cabinet has authorized Australian airstrikes in Iraq at the request of the Iraqi government and in support of the Iraqi government," Abbott said.
