Jones presents to Iraqi president credentials as US ambassador

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))  The US new Ambassador to Iraq Stuart E. Jones submitted his papers to Iraqi President Fuad Masoum on Thursday.

During his meeting with President Masoum, Jones spoke highly of the US-led military campaign against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), according to a statement by the Iraqi presidential office.

President Masoum said Iraq needs more military and humanitarian aid from the US and other friendly countries to combat the militant group, affirming the ability of the Iraqi and Peshmerga forces as well as the popular forces to defeat ISIL.

Jones said that the US, Iraq and other allies in the global coalition share interest in the eradication of terrorism, commending the partnership agreement between the US and Iraq.

Earlier today the US diplomat met Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim Al-Jaabari on the bilateral ties, Iraq's relations with neighboring countries and other regional issues of common concern, the statement said.

The two sides reviewed the implementation of the Strategic Framework Agreement for a Relationship of Friendship and Cooperation between the United States and the Republic of Iraq, signed on November 17, 2008.

Jones was confirmed by the US Senate as Ambassador to Iraq in last June.

In a related development the US Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL Gen. John R. Allen and deputy special envoy for Iraq Brett H. McGurk arrived here for talks with Iraqi leaders.

Allen arrived here earlier today on his first visit to Iraq since he took up the post; his trip is meant to push forward the international campaign against ISIL, the US Embassy said in a brief statement.

Allen and McGurk are scheduled to head for Belgium, Jordan, Egypt and Turkey to hold talks with the leaders of these countries in the framework of consultations among members of the Global Coalition.

On September 13, US Secretary of State John Kerry named Allen as coordinator for the Coalition against ISIL.
