Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday offered the first peek at the upcoming version of its flagship operating system, and pledged to make users a part in the development of its most famous product, while conceding the current version had veered off course.
The new operating system is called “Windows 10”, skipping the 9 in its established product-naming convention, marking a jump from the lackluster reception from Windows 8.
Described as Microsoft’s “most comprehensive platform ever,” the company said it will offer a tailored experience for all devices across a single platform family, and also allowing developers to build universal apps that will work on all hardware.
"Windows 10 will deliver the right experience on the right device at the right time," said Microsoft`s Terry Myerson, Vice President of Operations. "Windows 10 will run on the broadest types of devices ever."
At a San Francisco press event on Tuesday, Microsoft showed initial new features in the operating system, including work in multiple applications, such as email, Web browser and Excel spreadsheet all in one screen.
The “Start” menu will also be getting a makeover. Its screen is no longer the one huge grid of tiles for desktop users, as Microsoft decided to combine the “Metro” start screen and the traditional one.
Microsoft is hoping the transition to Windows 10 is much more comfortable than that of its predecessor.
Microsoft is also launching a Windows 10 “Insider Program” starting Wednesday, which will allow its most enthusiastic and vocal users the opportunity to help shape the Windows 10 before it is released to the public.
Microsoft will launch the Windows 10 in late 2015.
Microsoft`s decision to ditch a tangled model for its operating system will surely retain some of the lost market share over the last two years under the Windows 8.
Microsoft Corp. shares should be in focus today when the U.S. stock market opens.
