Obama, officials discuss anti-ISIL strategy

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) US President Barack Obama has discussed with top security officials Washington's strategy against the militant group, the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

The White House said in a statement that President Obama met with his National Security Council (NSC), late on Tuesday, to review the "comprehensive strategy to counter the threat posed by the ISIL in Iraq and Syria. Obama "received an update on the airstrikes in Iraq and Syria undertaken by the US military and our international partners, and the impact of these operations on ISIL" so far.

The president and the NSC also discussed "the importance of making progress on implementing the non-military aspects of the strategy, including organizing partner nation contributions along the multiple lines of effort that underpin our strategy to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL." Finally, Obama was briefed on the effects of the airstrikes on the Khorasan group.

Most notable among the many participants in the meeting were Vice President Joe Biden, as well as members of Obama's cabinet: Secretary of State John Kerry, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, Attorney General Eric Holder, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, and National Security Adviser Susan Rice.

The US Permanent Representative to the United Nations Samantha Power, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Martin Dempsey, Director of the FBI James Comey, and the Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL, General John Allen, also took part.
