Don't join US war against IS, CPM tells Modi

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The CPI-M yesterday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to join any unilateral American war against the Islamic State (IS), the Sunni insurgent group that now controls a vast territory.

"The Obama administration has been putting great pressure on India of late to join a US-led coalition against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria," the Communist Party of India-Marxist said.

"It may take advantage of Modi's presence in New York ... to make India fall in line with its plans. The (Indian) government must, under no circumstances, fall prey to these machinations.

"It must never join any unilateral US initiative of this sort, no matter how strongly such an initiative is portrayed as defending 'humanity' against 'the forces of barbarism'. "Any international response to the ISIS must have the sanction of the UN, without which it carries no legitimacy."

Modi, who came to power in May, has received a warm welcome in the United States, even though he was denied a visa in 2005 over rioting in his home state three years earlier that killed more than 1,000 people, most of them Muslims. Modi denies any wrongdoing and has been exonerated by Supreme Court investigation.

He has maintained a frantic schedule since arriving in America on Friday, even though he is fasting in accordance with Hindu custom and drank only warm water at the White House. Modi met more than a dozen US corporate leaders early on Monday and told them he was committed to liberalising India's economy.
