US grants organic industry, food systems USD52m


(MENAFN) The US Agriculture Secretary announced that the ministry is to grant USD52 million to support the growing organic industry and local and regional food systems, Xinhua reported.

The Agriculture Department said the fund will be granted through the ministry's five programs introduced, including Farmers Market Promotion Program and Local Foods Promotion Program.

The US organic food production has increased about 240 percent between 2002 and 2011, compared with 3 percent in the non- organic food market, the ministry's figures showed.

"Consumers are increasingly demanding more local and organic options," said the minister, adding that investing in local and regional food systems supports the livelihoods of farmers and farmers.
