Court jails 68 pro-Mursi protesters


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) An Egyptian court sentenced 68 people to up to 15 years in prison yesterday over protest clashes, in the latest mass sentencing of supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Mursi.

They were accused of participating in street violence on October 6, 2013 in which more than 50 demonstrators were shot dead in the capital after clashing with police.

The Cairo court sentenced 63 defendants to 15 years in prison and five others to 10 years, judicial sources and state media said.

Police have waged a harsh crackdown on supporters of Morsi since his ouster by the military in July 2013, killing hundreds in clashes and arresting thousands.

Dozens of policemen have also died the violence. Courts have sentenced hundreds of protesters to death or prison.
