Hong Kong head urges protest stoppage

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Hong Kong Chief Executive C Y Leung Tuesday urged "Occupy Central" movement organizers to end the protest immediately, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported from the city.

Speaking ahead of the Executive Council meeting, Leung said the movement has been affecting people's daily lives, according to the report.

"Some major roads were blocked by the protesters and that has disrupted emergency fire and ambulance services over the past few days," Hong Kong's top leader was quoted as saying.

Leung is also concerned that the protest will last for quite a long time, which will impact the city's economic development and its international reputation, the report said.

The protesters continued to block roads in central Hong Kong on Tuesday as they are against Beijing's decision to effectively exclude pro-democracy candidates from the first direct election for Hong Kong's chief executive in 2017.

In Beijing, the central government said on Sunday that it firmly opposes all illegal activities that could undermine rule of law and jeopardize "social tranquility." Hong Kong was a British colony till 1997, when China resumed sovereignty.
