(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman's handball team settled for the sixth place at the 17th Asian Games after losing 28-30 to Kuwait in the fifth-place playoff on Monday.
Oman coached by Egypt's Bassim El Sobky led 15-12 at half-time. However Kuwait rallied in the second session to outplay the sultanate side 18-13. Asaad al Hasani was the top-scorer for Oman with seven goals while Mahmood al Harthy scored six goals.
Hamed al Dughaishi converted five goals while Hassan al Jabri and Ahmed al Hinai chipped in with three goals each. Goalkeeper Hussain al Jabri had a forgettable day as he failed to save any of the 12 attempts from the Kuwaiti players while Muneer al Balushi saved eight of 26 shots. In athletics the 4x100m quartet of Obaid al Quraini Barakat al Harthy Mohammed Obaid and Yahya al Noufali was disqualified in the first-round heats that featured four teams. In 4x400m relay the Omani team of Salah al Ajmi Othman al Busaidi Ahmed Mubarak and Ahmed al Marjabi finished fourth with a time of 3m10.01s.
However Oman qualified for Thursday's final as one of the best finishers besides the six qualifying teams from the two heats. In shooting Yasir al Nasseri was placed 27th among 39 participants after the first day of the qualification round in the skeet event with a total score of 64 (20 22 22).
China's Fan Zhang led the field with a score of 75 (25 25 25). Nasseri will wrap up his qualification round at the Gyeonggido Shooting Range on Tuesday. Also on Tuesday Oman's hockey team will take on Bangladesh in a playoff spot for the seventh place while three sailors including 12 year old Samiha al Riyami will compete in the penultimate races of their respective classes.
In athletics Barakat al Harthy and Yahya al Noufali will compete in the men's 200m preliminary first-round one heats while Shnoona al Habsi and Mazoon al Alawi will run in the women's 200m first-round heats.
