Al Garni claims 5,000m Asian Games crown, teenage heartbreak

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency)  Qatar's Mohamad Al Garni set a record on
the track at the Asian Games Saturday as the first medals were won in
athletics but there was heartbreak for teenager Ruth Jebet who was
disqualified, dpa reported.

Running in the men's 5,000m, Al Garni lurked behind the leading pack
until the final 300m but burst away with a strong sprint to set a
Games record of 13 minutes 26.13 seconds, shattering Toshinari
Takaoka's mark from 1994 by over 12 seconds. Alemu Bekele Gebre and
Albert Kibichii claimed silver and bronze for Bahrain.

'I feel good, it was an easy race,' Al Garni said. 'I pushed myself
today. I'm so happy. I'm looking forward to the 1,500m race. I would
like to get another medal.'
