UN Chief meets Syrian opposition figure, Assad regime official separately


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon discussed with President of the Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces Hadi Al-Bahra, the devastating situation in Syria, with its horrifying level of human suffering.

Ban noted, during the meeting that took place on the sidelines of the 69th General Assembly in Saturday, that the conflict in Syria has deep political roots and can only be resolved through a credible political process.

Both officials agreed that a political solution is urgent and crucial in order to resolve the Syrian conflict and address the growing humanitarian needs in a sustainable manner.

Ban hoped that the Syrian Opposition Coalition would have a cooperative engagement with his Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, and his Deputy Special Envoy, Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy.

Earlier on Saturday, Ban met Syrian Foreign Minister, Walid Al-Muallem where they discussed the evolving situation in Syria and in the region, including the latest international efforts against terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq.

They concurred that a political solution is urgently needed to resolve the Syrian conflict and to address the growing humanitarian needs.

Ban called for renewed efforts to start a credible political process, and expressed the hope that the Syrian Government would continue to cooperate with De Mistura. He also expressed strong hope for a substantial reduction of violence in Syria, and called on the Government of Syria to spare no effort to protect lives and the rights of people, and facilitate humanitarian aid to all in need in Syria.
