Suarez in reckoning for Oman friendly

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Controversial Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez is likely to feature in a friendly match for his country against hosts Oman which will be played in Buraimi on October 13.

Suarez who also plays for Spanish giant Barcelona is one of 29 players in a preliminary Uruguay squad picked in Montevideo on Friday for two friendlies next month in Saudi Arabia on October 10 and then in Oman three days later.

However it is entirely up to Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez to decide if he will pick Suarez for the two matches.

The Oman-Uruguay match will be played at the newly-built Buraimi Sports Complex.

Suarez is banned from Uruguay's next eight competitive matches for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil meaning he will miss next year's Copa America and some of 2018 World Cup qualifiers. The ban also covers competitive matches for Barcelona for another month.

However he can play in friendlies after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) removed a clause which banned him from 'any football activity' during his four-month suspension.

Tabarez declined to call up Suarez for two friendlies this month against Japan and South Korea. Uruguay won both.

Oman coached by Frenchman Paul Le Guen takes on Uruguay three days after it plays Costa Rica in Sohar on October 10. Both the matches are part of Oman's build-up for the Gulf Cup which will be held in Riyadh Saudi Arabia from November 13-26.
