KPL to become richest domestic cricket event in UAE

Dubai — Cricket players in the UAE are in for a bonanza from the Kerala Premier League (KPL Dubai) third season scheduled to begin at the ICC Cricket Ground here on October 17. “The winner of third season will get a cash prize of Dh125000 while the runner-up will receive Dh60000” Paul T Joseph one of the KPL directors announced at a Press conference at the Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel here on Tuesday night.



“The tournament’s best batsman bowler and wicket-keeper will get Dh7500 each while the player of the tournament will be richer by Dh10000. Besides the man-of-the-match will be awarded Dh500 each. The total prize money will be Dh250000 making KPL the richest domestic cricket tournament in the UAE” he added.



While the inaugural tournament offered Dh170000 the prizemoney had been increased to Dh200000 for the second edition the organisers said.



A total of 12 teams will participate in the tournament backed by the Dubai Cricket Council. Amin Farooq honorary secretary of DCC said: “We wish all the best for the tournament and teams. We hope the third season will offer bigger and better cricket.”



He cautioned team owners including himself to seek proper no objection certificate for overseas players who had played for their country at any level. “It is mandatory and the Emirates Cricket Board have conveyed to us that without NOC no national (all formats all levels) player will be allowed to play” he pointed out.



In reply to a question by the Khaleej Times he clarified that till now there was no regulation about overseas players from other clubs. “It is only for the players who may have respresented their respective countries at U-19 a team or senior team” he clarified.



While talking about the new format and teams CTK Nasir director KPL said: “This time we have two new teams: Trivandrum Royals (owned by Freddy Sidhwa) and Kottayam Crusaders (Gopal Jaspara). “There are only two groups and a we have a total of 37 matches with the final scheduled for November 21.” The matches will be played simultaneously for most of the days at the ICC grounds. Popular Malayalam actor and KPL brand ambassador Suresh Gopi said: “I have been with KPL from the inaugural season itself and I am so happy to associate with this passionate group of cricket lovers.”



Besides Gopi south Indian actors Narain and Bhaama will also be present during the opening ceremony of KPL third season on October 17. “We created a passion for cricket with the launch of KPL. The tournament is for all nationalities and we have given opportunities to UAE and international players in our past events” Paul pointed out.



While talking about the entertainment aspect of the tourney TS Kaladharan director KPL said: “We will try our best to attract cricket fans and family crowd to the ground during the matches.”
