Dubai: Australian leading jockey Kerrin McEvoy has amicably parted ways with Godolphin and became a freelance jockey the Racing Post said on Tuesday.

According to the paper the brilliant jockey who rode some big winners for the Dubai operation in Europe Middle East and Down Under has told Sky Racing Australia that “It’s been a great association. To be whisked overseas as a baby-faced 23-year-old and working with Frankie Dettori and the whole operation was an eye opener. His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai has left an indelible mark on my career.

“It’s been a wonderful ride and I’ve been a very lucky boy.”

Explaining the thinking behind the move McEvoy added: “The nature of the jockey bookings suggested I might not be on as many Godolphin-owned horses as I previously had been.”

Godolphin no longer retains jockeys on a full-time basis and McEvoy has had to share rides with James McDonald since John O’Shea’s appointment as trainer for Godolphin in Australia last year.

McEvoy said: “It’s an amicable split and I’m sure there’ll be times where I’ll be in the royal blue in the future and hopefully ride some more winners for Shaikh Mohammed and I look forward to that.”

During his time in Britain McEvoy won the 2004 St Leger on Rule Of Law and the 2005 St James’s Palace Stakes on Shamardal when riding for Saeed bin Suroor and he has also landed a host of big prizes in Australia including the Golden Slipper on Sepoy and Caulfield Guineas on Helmet.

The Godolphin stable wrote on its official website that they were notified by Kerrin McEvoy that he would be standing down from his position as stable rider effective from Tuesday September 23 2014.

The announcement brings to a close a twelve year career as stable rider for Shaikh Mohammed riding as number 2 jockey in Newmarket for Saeed bin Suroor and then number 1 jockey in Australia for Darley in Australia under Peter Snowden. Since May 5 McEvoy has been employed under Godolphin’s new trainer John O’Shea.

Godolphin Racing Manager Henry Plumptre said “McEvoy came in to see me last week to discuss his future and indicated that he would like to continue his career as a freelance jockey. Given the length of service and considerable expertise that he has given both to Darley and Godolphin I agreed with him that our relationship would end today. From our perspective and that of the whole Australian team we are very sad to lose his services day to day but expect to see him on Godolphin horses on a regular basis in his new role as a freelance rider. McEvoy has been an integral part of our success in Australia since 2008 and on behalf of the whole Darley and Godolphin operation in Australia we wish him and Cathy the very best for the future”.
