UAE cyclist Al Hammadi misses out on a bronze by four points


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Emirati cyclists won two races in the six-race Omanium event including the 40-km points race but that was not enough as he accumulated 225 points and lagged just four behind the bronze medal winner.

Incheon: It was a case of so near yet so far for the UAE cyclist Yousuf Al Hammadi who on Tuesday missed the Omnium bronze by four points on the second day of the event at Incheon Asian Games.

The Emirati cyclists won two races in the six-race Omanium event including the 40-km points race but that was not enough as he accumulated 225 points and lagged just four behind the bronze medal winner. Hong Kong’s Cheung King Lok finished ahead of him with 229 points.

Eiya Hashimoto of Japan won the gold with a total of 234 points while South Korean cyclist Cho Hosung won the silver with 232 points. In Omnium the winner is determined by adding the score of six events of both short and long distances races held over two days. The 12 riders representing as many countries had done the 15km scratch race the elimination race and 4km individual time trial on Monday and followed it up with a 1km time trial a 330m flying lap and finally the 40km points race.

On the other hand the UAE swimmer Mohammad Al Muhairi went out of the men’s 50m freestyle after finishing seventh in the fourth heat of the event at the Munhak Aquatics Centre earlier in the morning. Al Muhairi was timed at 24.54 seconds more than two seconds off the time set by heat winner Ito Kenta of Japan who finished in 22.64 seconds.

And the much expected bowling players failed to deliver medal for the UAE. They bowed out with an inconsistency performance in the men’s singles at the Anyang Hogye Gymnasium. Thailand dominated the event with gold medalist Larp Apharat Yannaphon and bronze winner Kunaksorn Sithiphol were sepearated by China’s Du Jianchao who captured the silver.

The 103 bowlers representing 18 countries were divided into two groups with Group A bowling in the morning and Group B in the evening. The scores were then tallied and the best three bowlers were presented with the medals. The UAE had two bowlers Hussain Al Suwaidi and former Asian Games silver medallist Shaker Ali were in Group A and they finished in eighth and ninth respectively. But the four Emiratis who turned up later in the afternoon failed to back each other up and lost out ona medal chance.

The bowling has been the most successful sporting desipline for the UAE at the Asian Games since they began to win Asiad medals in 1990. Ten of the 23 Asian Games medals won by the UAE athletes have been claimed by the UAE bowling aces.
