Pipe smoking has a long history in the US with the habit being more common among the elderly. The practice was more popular during the early-to-mid 20th century before cigarette smoking became widespread and volume sales of pipe tobacco continued to suffer from an old-fashioned image during the early part of the review period. RYO tobacco has also enjoyed a longstanding presence in the US. Like other smoking tobacco products however RYO tobacco has slowly slipped out of the mainstream as filtered machine-manufactured cigarettes have become the standard form of tobacco product. Although smoking tobacco has traditionally been viewed as an inexpensive alternative to cigarettes more recently RYO tobacco companies have begun marketing stronger higher-quality blends to appeal to a more discerning audience.

Competitive Landscape

Scandinavian Tobacco Group subsidiary Lane Ltd was the leading player in smoking tobacco in 2013 with a volume share of 8%. Its leading position in the fragmented category is due in part to the fact that it is the only player with a significant presence in both RYO tobacco and pipe tobacco holding a volume share of 25% in RYO tobacco and 5% in pipe tobacco during 2013. Lane's Bugler RYO tobacco brand was the largest single RYO tobacco brand available in the US in 2013 with a volume share of 12% while its Captain Black brand held the leading volume share within pipe tobacco with a 2% volume share. Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) acquired the Lane brand from Reynolds in March 2011 with all smoking tobacco brands transferring ownership. Lane's volume share in smoking tobacco declined steadily over the course of the review period due to the high growth recorded by private label unbranded and locally branded pipe tobacco.

Industry Prospects

Volume sales of smoking tobacco are expected to decline at a CAGR of -6% over the forecast period falling to 12266 tonnes in 2018. In comparison volume sales of smoking tobacco increased at a CAGR of 7% over the review period. This dramatic turnaround in the category's performance is set to be largely the consequence of prospective legislation aimed at eliminating any tax loopholes currently used by manufacturers of smoking tobacco. Currently smoking tobacco products labelled as 'pipe tobacco' are able to avoid certain taxes and are consequently much cheaper to purchase. This lower price point boosted volume sales of pipe tobacco at a CAGR of 51% over the review period. However legislators at local state and federal level are fully aware of this unintentional tax loop-hole and are currently making moves to close it. Without the tax benefits they currently enjoy the leading manufacturers of pipe tobacco in the US will be unable to maintain such low prices for their products which is likely to drive the category back to where it was before this loophole was discovered in 2009. It should be noted that the much more optimistic forecasts for the category published in the previous edition of this report were made under the assumption that this tax issue would not be addressed.
