Mass Murder On The Mediterranean Sea Calls For More Private Initiatives

(MENAFNEditorial)

Brownie’s Marine Group and Brownie’s Global Logistics has shown support for Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) early September 2014 by donating 85 of the Brownie’s Marine Group patented SOLAS life jackets (BMG_SOLAS 2010). The costs of this donation was absorbed by Brownie’s Marine Group’s CEO Robert Carmichael personally.

The BMG-SOLAS 2010 approved lifejackets have been designed to enable persons offshore passengers and cargo ship personnel to operate in complete safety and includes the Brownie’s Marine Group patented performance enhancing neck-collar technology. Their light weight and modern design make them comfortable to wear even for extended periods of time and they have special covers that are easy to remove for cleaning. BMG-SOLAS 2010 lifejackets can turn an unconscious person to an optimal floating angle with a face up position securing freeboard.

The BMG_SOLAS 2010 has achieved the following approvals: SOLAS MSC 48(66) including 2010 amendments and EU-directive 96/98/EC. For more information please go to Brownie’s Marine Group’s website.

MOAS is a registered Foundation dedicated to preventing loss of life at sea by providing aid assistance and medical help to migrants who find themselves in distress whilst crossing the Mediterranean Sea in unsafe boats.

Equipped with a 40-metre boat two RIBS two Remote Piloted Aircraft and a highly experienced crew of rescuers and paramedics MOAS is able to locate monitor and assist boats in distress.

Founded by Christopher and Regina Catrambone he from New Orleans (US) and she from Reggio Calabria (Italy) and headed by Martin Xuereb Malta's former Chief of Defence MOAS is financed by private individuals who strongly believe in mitigating more disasters at sea.

More than 20000 men women and children are estimated to have lost their lives in the past 20 years while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea in search of a better life.

The bulk of the would-be refugees are escaping violence prosecution and hardship from places as far off as Libya Eritrea Somalia and more recently Syria.

The crossings to Europe are often organized by criminal gangs operating largely from Libya. Migrants are placed on rickety boats with very little resources in the hope that they will be rescued by authorities before they dehydrate or drown.

In October 2013 two boats packed with migrants capsized off the coast of the Italian island of Lampedusa adding at least 400 people to the death toll an incident that prompted the MOAS initiative. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon recently called on the public to “take action to prevent such tragedies in the future” which is exactly what MOAS is doing.

Another incident causing the death of hundreds more took place as late as last week when a boat seemingly purposely rammed a fishing trawler carrying 500 migrants across the Mediterranean making the need for initiatives like MOAS even more evident.

Brownie’s Marine Group is pleased to be able to support the MOAS initiative and encourages others to do the same.
