Oman marks increase in power generation, supply


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Working to match the continuous increase in demand for electricity the sultanate has been able to raise net production by 13 per cent in Q2 2014 compared to Q2 2013.

Electricity supply too has been higher by 16.9 per cent as the number of customers across the sultanate grew nine per cent from 825234 in Q2 2013 to 896511 in Q2 2014.

Supply for the whole of 2014 is expected to be 26006GWh an increase of 14 per cent over 2013 while net electricity production is estimated to be 29072GWh 12 per cent higher than 2013.

Muscat governorate continues to have the largest customer base with 273447 accounts and was supplied with a total of 2.34mn MWh electricity in Q2 2014 followed by North Batinah with 106538 customers and a 1232217MWh supply. South Batinah had 116708 customers and supply of 675177MWh.

Al Wusta has smallest customer base with 11961 accounts followed by Musandam with 12103.

The Authority for Electricity Regulation (AER) in its second quarterly update of 2014 reported that 7349.6GWh of net electricity was produced in Oman in Q2 2014 which was 13 per cent higher than in Q2 2013.

For the Main Interconnected System (MIS) served by three distribution networks of Muscat Electricity Distribution Company (MEDC) Mazoon Electricity Company (MZEC) and Majan Electricity Company (MJEC) Q2 2014 net electricity production was 14.2 per cent higher than Q2 2013.

For Rural Areas Electricity Company (RAECO) systems Q2 2014 net electricity production was 9.8 per cent higher than Q2 2013. For the Dhofar Power System net electricity production was up 7.2 per cent during the same period.

The maximum demand for MIS in Q2 2014 was 14 per cent higher than in Q2 2013 peaking at 5269MW in June compared to 4634MW in June 2013. Dhofar Power System's maximum demand in Q2 2014 was four per cent higher from Q2 2013 with a peak demand of 439MW (June) as against 422MW (May 2013).

Electricity supply in Oman in Q2 2014 was 16.9 per cent higher than in Q2 2013. The AER's present estimate of total supply for the sultanate in 2014 is 26006GWh which would be 14 per cent higher than 2013.

The authority's present net electricity production estimate for 2014 is 29072GWh which  would be 12 per cent higher than 2013.

According to AER estimates MIS net electricity production for 2014 is 25708GWh 13 per cent higher than 2013 RAECO systems' net production for 2014 is 702GWh an increase of ten per cent over 2013 and Dhofar Power System's net electricity production estimates for 2014 is 2665GWh which would be eight per cent higher than 2013.

The number of MIS customer accounts increased by 8.5 per cent from 725119 in Q2 2013 to 786828 in Q2 2014.

The number of RAECO customer accounts increased by 9.6 per cent from 26919 to 29505 and for Dhofar Power System customers increased by 9.5 per cent from 73196 to 80178 in the same period.
