Qatar Supports Efforts to Tackle Desertification and Drought Problems


(MENAFN- QNA) Qatar Permanent Mission to the United Nations has organized a high-level session on "sustainable land management for adaptation and flexibility and food security". The Event was held at United Nations Headquarters in New York, on the sidelines of the 69th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, and the Global Summit on climate for the year of 2014, in collaboration with the Executive Secretariat of the Global Alliance for Dryland.

It was also organized in cooperation with Morocco, Germany, Iceland, and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in addition to members of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.

Opening the event, HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Assistant Foreign Minister for International Cooperation, stressed the importance of sustainable land management for adaptation and flexibility and food security issue, noting that the international community is in the process of finalizing the plan for sustainable development beyond 2015.

HE said, "The State of Qatar has repeatedly stressed, in various forums, the importance of issues related to sustainable agriculture and food security and nutrition and its relationship to water and poverty, health, energy, climate, and the need to give these issues the importance they deserve in the goals of sustainable development" .. pointing out these goals could not be achieved without addressing the desertification, land degradation and drought.

He added that Qatar through the Group of Friends on desertification, land degradation and drought highlighted the critical importance of the phenomenon of desertification, land degradation and drought, as it considers among the most dangerous natural phenomena with a severe impact on many aspects of sustainable development" . He referred to the national legislation which has given great importance to the issues related to the environment, particularly in the article (33) of the National Constitution, and the Qatar National Vision 2030.
