New Market Research Report Other Pet Food in Canada

(MENAFNEditorial)

Other pet food volume sales declined by 2% in 2013 maintaining the negative trend observed since 2009. A modest improvement in this regard is projected for 2014 when volume sales are expected to remain static. The main factor that has undermined other pet food volume sales in recent years has been the steady decline in the pet bird population. This is partly the result of import restrictions introduced to prevent the spread of avian flu and similar diseases. Additionally the relatively high cost of exotic birds has discouraged many Canadians from acquiring such animals particularly those that are new to keeping pet birds. Because bird food has historically been the largest category in volume terms falling demand for these products has dragged down the performance of other pet food as a whole. Growth in the pet fish and small mammal/reptile populations has been too modest to compensate for this. Moreover fish food is a very low volume category due to the small size of the creatures in question while owners of small mammals commonly feed these pets homemade foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables. Similarly reptiles are commonly fed on insects and other types of 'live feed' which are excluded from Euromonitor International definitions of other pet food.

Competitive Landscape

Spectrum Brands Inc remained the overall leader in other pet food in 2013 with a value sales share of 25%. This was mainly due to the dominant position of its Tetra brand in fish food though the company also ranked fourth in small mammal/reptile food and fifth in bird food. Aside from a longstanding global reputation for offering good quality products at reasonable prices key to this company's success in Canada is an extensive distribution network that covers both specialist and mainstream retail channels. Additionally the company's reputation for quality in other pet food is reinforced by the fact that it also manufactures a wide range of non-food products for the care of fish birds reptiles and small mammals.

Industry Prospects

While total pet food volume sales are expected to decline over the forecast period the rate of decline predicted is considerably slower than that witnessed during the review period. Similarly after having declined during the review period modest but steady growth is projected in other pet food value sales at constant 2014 prices. The improvement in volume terms will be partly due to continued growth in the popularity of keeping pet reptiles and fish which will help to offset further declines in the bird population. At the same time volume sales will be bolstered as busier lifestyles and better education about pet nutrition lead more owners of reptiles birds and small mammals to switch from giving these animals 'homemade' food (insects live feed fruits and vegetables etc) to buying them prepared products. Marketing campaigns and the launch of healthier nutritionally balanced and more expensive products will be key drivers of this latter trend which will also fuel growth in total value sales at constant 2014 prices.
